We are a certified naturally grown fruit and vegetable farm on the Cumberland Plateau. Herb and Plow Farms is family owned and operated. Our family purchased an abandoned, overgrown , trashed farm in East Tennessee in 2009. The land had so many natural resources such as a spring, creeks, timber and fertile fields, that we overlooked the mess and cleaned it up for all the hidden treasures it had. The farm had not had any crops for over 10 years, so with that and our sustainable farming methods, we were able to qualify for certified naturally grown status our first year.

In 2 short years we built our home here on the plateau, created a market garden, orchard, and berries. We go to farmers markets in Knoxville, Oakridge and Crossville. We do an online farmers markets, crossville.locallygrown.net, and we currently offer a Fall/Winter CSA.

We use only non-GMO seeds. No conventional fertilizers are used. Our soil is built up with mushroom compost, chicken manure, kelp, and vegetable compost. We also practice crop rotation to a science because it is very important for the health of our soil. Cover crops are used throughout the growing season as mulch, weed retardants and Fall/Winter coverings. Cover crops not only prevent erosion , insect damage, and the loss of our topsoil, but it also provides wonderful nutrients that we return to the dirt in the spring by tilling this “green manure” back into the ground. Our soil is rich, loamy , and full of fat , healthy earthworms. The superior flavor of the food is the true test.

No conventional pesticides are used. We only use plant based , biodegradable sprays that are USDA certified organic.

Drip irrigation is used to give more precise irrigation in the beds and not waste water in the walk paths. This also reduces weeds and the amount of water used.

We also use low tech high and low tunnels to extend our growing seasons. These are non-heated and rely entirely on solarization for its heat. We plan to have multiple high and low tunnels and provide produce year round. We are off to a good start this year!

Come visit
